England 'B' 4 Russia 'B' 1
Friendly
Loftus Road, London, England - Tuesday 21 April 1998

After players from England's last 'B' international failed to impress management, with the exception of Merson, in February, tonight's game was a different story. Hero of the night was Le Tissier on his return to England duty. True to Southampton manager David Jones' words last week, after the striker's selection, Le Tissier performed so well that Hoddle will find it hard to ignore him for next month's game against Saudi Arabia.

The game was only two mintues old when Les Ferdinand scored his first goal since last August. Trevor Sinclair provided the cross for Ferdinand to head home. Just eleven minutes later Le Tissier began his hat-trick. England were flowing and Sinclair again crossed the ball, this time to Le Tissier who thumped the cross into the net, on the half-volley.

Moments before half-time, Anderton came close to putting the home side further ahead but his moment of glory was prevented by a goal-line clearance.

With seven minutes remaining on the clock, Russia pulled back a goal through Bouznikine. However it didn't stop England trying for another goal. England's third goal of the night came just one minute after Russia scored. Le Tissier sailed past three opposition players to place the ball past Kharine, into the bottom corner of the net. Le Tissier's hat-trick could have been completed when he headed the ball from a David Johnson cross, but alas the ball hit the bar.

On the stroke of full-time Le Tissier got his third goal, and England's fourth. A cross again from Johnson on the left, Le Tissier controlled the ball with one touch and smashed the ball into the net with his left foot.
