This was a game that many wanted cancelling due to the Premiership title race and the crisis in Kosovo, Kevin Keegan saw
it as an opportunity to introduce young players to the senior team. Both Manchester United and Arsenal were able to retain two of their England players but more withdrew from the squad due to injury after the Premiership games the weekend before England travelled to Hungary. It was a special game for Seaman who received his 50th cap.
Five young players made their senior debuts in Budapest: Kevin Phillips, Wes Brown, Jamie Carragher, Michael Gray
and Emile Heskey. Phillips debut possibly received the most attention as the partenered Shearer, and it was his effort which saw England try to take the lead after five minutes. Kiraly, though, collected the ball without much trouble.
Phillips was minutes later involved in play which left England's players claiming a penalty but the referee waved for
play to continue. Seaman was forced to make a save soon after when Illis broke free, however, Shearer broke the deadlock after 21 minutes after a challenge by Halmai resulted in a penalty. Shearer converted the spot-kick.
David Seaman was kept busy during the first half thanks to Illis, Dombi and Matyus. Thankfully the England goalkeeper
was on form to prevent an equaliser.
Hungary made a substitution at half-time with Somogyi taking the field for Pisont. England made no changes.
The visitors started the second half brightly but Hungary were soon pressuring England's defence. Dombi curled the ball from 25 yards but Seaman managed to get his fingers to the ball to push it over the crossbar.
With the game just over an hour old, Keegan made his first change to his line-up, Carragher replacing Ferdinand. Hungary followed this two minutes later swapping Toth for Kosos.
There were appeals for a penalty from Hungary after 71 minutes when Illis went to the ground after a challenge by Keown but the referee did not award a foul against England.
With only 14 minutes remaining Hrutka equalised with a 25 yard drive, beating Seaman. England followed this goal by sending on fresh, young legs but despite all their effort England couldn't grab the match winner.
